JKD Instructors - background

As I’ve become older I find that I fall into that old trap of complacency. What seems perfectly obvious to me is a mystery to others and, I dare so, the opposite is true. No, I don’t know how to put up a curtain pole, why would I want to? Which brings me to the point of this article. Many students who train at UFS don’t know the heritage or lineage of their club, their instructors or who are the principles in Jeet Kune Do. This will seek to address that.

A Modern Boudicea

Anne-MarieBack in the times of the Romans there was a woman of the Iceni tribe that rose up against them and almost brought the mighty Roman army to its knees. Her name was Boudicea (or in the modern parlance Boudicca) – either way she was an amazing warrior and one that many future warriors have compared themselves to. Queen Elizabeth 1 was fond of quoting Boudicea’s name. In modern times, Margaret Thatcher was compared to the ancient Iceni queen.

The Golden Age Of Women's Stick-fighting

A recent letter in ‘MAI’ quoted Jim Gannon’s all-time legends of the British Stick-fighting world. I was honoured to be listed, but at the same time the list was exclusively male. Women have been competing since 1992, but none were listed. Having been instrumental in getting the women to compete I thought it was time to refer back to what I would call the ‘golden age of women’s stick-fighting’.

Bruce Lee has Died

Bruce LeeAs a long-standing aficionado, of Bruce Lee it is my sad duty to convey that Bruce Lee has died. Oh very clever, you say, we know he died in 1973, but he didn’t, did he? He passed on, but his legend began with his physical death and the explosion caused by ‘Enter The Dragon’ to become the biggest martial arts icon ever. But, in 2006, to who?
